US Senate Imposes New Sanctions On Russia


The U.S. Senate voted almost unanimously on Thursday (27 July) to impose new sanctions on Russia, placing President Donald Trump in a tough position by forcing him to take a hard line on Moscow or veto the legislation and infuriate his own Republican Party. It may also cause the EU to waver on its own sanctions amid fears over energy security.

The legislation will effectively put an end to Trump’s hopes for warmer ties with Moscow as his administration remains mired in congressional investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
