‘The gas deal between Greece and Russia suddenly looks less exciting’


Back in June, Russia signed a preliminary $2.27 billion agreement on building a pipeline through Greece. The new project is an extension of the so-called Turkish Stream, a gas pipeline designed to bring Russian gas to Europe via Greece, with an annual capacity of 47 billion cubic meters. Russia likes this deal given the strategic geopolitical importance: The Turkish Stream is designed to bypass Ukraine, which allows Russia to maintain its leverage over the EU and to additionally hurt Kiev.
